Ukraine has officially appealed to the EU with a request for €220 million in assistance for a specific purpose — to compensate interest on loans for agricultural producers. They need these funds to carry out the autumn sowing campaign and continue their operations amid export difficulties caused by the shutdown of Black Sea ports.

This was reported by Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine Taras Vysotskyi during a conversation with journalists.

The decisions adopted by the government to date may make it possible to attract up to UAH 80 billion, but we understand that if the difficult situation with the port blockade continues, this amount will be insufficient in the context of several months of operations. The next level of funding required is up to UAH 200 billion — this is what the agricultural sector needs to cover all its needs by the end of the year and prepare for spring fieldwork. Receiving assistance from the EU will make it possible to increase the amount of funds raised and the amount of lending available to each producer.

The minister added that this targeted request is intended specifically for this purpose — to provide agricultural producers with access to credit so that they can continue operating until exports resume. Once exports through the ports of Greater Odesa resume, agricultural producers will be able to sell their products and repay the loans. The state will compensate the interest on these loans.

«We have provided all the detailed information and expect to receive a clear response from the European Commission by the end of August. The current decisions that have been adopted will cover the critical need until October. But we need to think ahead about what to do next, if such a need arises — from November through the end of winter,» Taras Vysotskyi emphasized.
