Agroprodservice Shifts to Growing Crops Exclusively for Its Own Needs

Given the logistics difficulties, the diversified agro-industrial company Agroprodservice, which operates a fully closed production cycle, has revised its crop rotation and shifted primarily to crops that can be used for its own needs.

Taras Baran, Commercial Director of Agroprodservice, said this during AgroFoodSummit in Mersin, Türkiye.

«Business in Ukraine is changing because the familiar chain that used to work for agricultural producers — growing products, signing a contract and selling them through a port — no longer works. So today, the market requires change. Most producers in Ukraine operate according to the principle of ‘grow and sell’, but our company’s strategy is to produce and sell value-added products,» Taras Baran noted.

Agroprodservice cultivates around 55 thousand hectares of land and operates in crop production, livestock farming, processing and the production of value-added products. Today, 60% of what is grown in the company’s fields is processed into various products: compound feed, meat and processed oilseed products.

We are trying to create as much added value as possible and keep it in Ukraine. We reviewed our historical consumption of winter barley and doubled the area under the crop, as our pig farming operations require this product. We sow wheat in line with our own consumption needs. We have increased the area under rapeseed, soybeans and sunflower: these are crops with higher margins and ones that we can process to some extent.

According to the expert, the company processes all of the soybeans it grows for its own consumption, while sunflower is processed on a tolling basis.

«Unfortunately, we cannot influence global prices or the situation with the ports, but we do make decisions about what we can produce, how we can process it, where we can sell it and how we can organise logistics. And even if something does not work out, we continue looking for solutions and options because we cannot stop production,» Taras Baran emphasised.
