Ukraine and the European Commission have discussed changing the mechanism for administering tariff quotas for dairy products and flour, as well as expanding opportunities for Ukrainian bioethanol exports to the EU.
Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine Taras Vysotskyi said this during his weekly briefing with journalists.
He noted that since 1 July, Ukraine has required 7% bioethanol to be added to petrol. Due to the war, petrol for the Ukrainian market is imported from the EU with bioethanol already added. Together with this petrol, Ukraine imports an average of around 10 thousand tonnes of bioethanol per month — around 120 thousand tonnes per year.
«We submitted a request to create a system that would allow us to receive an additional quota equivalent to the volume of bioethanol exported to Ukraine as part of petrol. Such a practice already exists for other products, for example dairy products. We are asking for this approach to be applied to bioethanol for Ukraine. Then, if we are indeed importing this petrol and bringing in this bioethanol, this should become our additional quota. Accordingly, by exporting this bioethanol to the European Union, we would not affect their domestic market,» Taras Vysotskyi noted.
He added that Ukraine is proposing that the EU take into account the volumes of imported petrol containing bioethanol and grant an additional quota of 120 thousand tonnes for exports of Ukrainian bioethanol. The current quota for Ukrainian bioethanol exports to the EU stands at 125 thousand tonnes.
