The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries of Japan (MAFF) conducted an online audit of Ukraine’s control system and poultry production facilities last week.

According to the State Service of Ukraine on Food Safety and Consumer Protection, this is one of the key stages of many years of work aimed at lifting restrictions on imports of Ukrainian poultry products into Japan.

«Ukraine previously had access to this market: exports of poultry meat and poultry meat products were opened in 2020, and table eggs in 2021. However, following the detection of an avian influenza outbreak among wild birds in 2021, the Japanese side suspended the certification of poultry products from Ukraine. The restrictions applied to poultry meat and poultry meat products, as well as table eggs,» the agency recalled, noting that since then, the parties have been carrying out systematic work to restore trade.

During the online audit, Japanese specialists are assessing the state control system and the operations of Ukrainian production facilities accredited to export the relevant products to Japan. The Ukrainian side is providing the necessary explanations regarding the organisation of state control and the practical implementation of the importing country’s requirements.

If the audit results are positive, Japan’s competent authority will be able to proceed with lifting restrictions on imports of poultry products from Ukrainian facilities accredited for export to Japan.
