The traditional area for millet cultivation in Ukraine is the steppe regions. At the same time, under the influence of russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, changes in production geography and climatic factors, the area of millet cultivation is gradually shifting and expanding, particularly towards the Forest-Steppe and Polissia regions.
Oleksandr Nechyporenko, Deputy Director for Research at the National Scientific Centre «Institute of Agrarian Economics» and Corresponding Member of the National Academy of Agrarian Sciences of Ukraine (NAAS), told AgroPortal.ua.
According to him, before the start of russia’s armed aggression against Ukraine in 2022, the main producing regions included Odesa Region, which accounted for 12.2% of the total harvest, Kharkiv Region — 11.6%, and Kherson Region — 10.6%.
In 2025, the leading positions were held by Kharkiv Region (20.4%), Kyiv Region (11.3%) and Poltava Region (11.1%). Significant production volumes were also recorded in Vinnytsia and Zhytomyr regions (over 6%), Sumy Region (7.5%) and Chernihiv Region (9%).
Millet cultivation has become more geographically widespread, reducing the relevance of identifying only a few traditional production regions, the scientist concluded.
