The choice of berry crops for investment in Ukraine increasingly depends not only on the potential price of the berries, but on the overall economics of production — yields, labour costs, opportunities for mechanisation and processing, and access to a guaranteed market.
This conclusion was reached by participants of a conference held in Rivne, according to the Berry Growers of Ukraine Association.
It is noted that the question of which crops could become new growth areas generated the most discussion. As a result, berry producers and processors identified the following crops as the most promising for further development:
Experts also noted that a common feature of many promising crops is the possibility of mechanised harvesting. For crops where manual labour accounts for a significant share of costs, opportunities for scaling up are limited. Therefore, crops that allow harvesting to be mechanised and the production process to be largely standardised may have strong potential. This applies, in particular, to currants and sour cherries.

Ukraine ranks 10th in the world and first in Eastern Europe by the area of blueberry plantings. At the same time, in terms of yield, Ukrainian producers lag significantly behind the global level and their main competitors.

Ukrainian berry farms are redirecting part of their production to foreign markets due to declining domestic consumption. The European Union remains the main destination, while producers have also been expanding their presence in the US in recent years.
