Ukrainian berry farms are redirecting part of their production to foreign markets due to declining domestic consumption. The European Union remains the main destination, while producers have also been expanding their presence in the US in recent years.
This was reported in a story by Fakty ICTV.
According to Iryna Kukhtina, President of the Ukrainian Berries Association, the development of the sector is largely supported by the price competitiveness of Ukrainian products. Due to the decline in the domestic market, producers are being forced to direct larger volumes to exports.
Over the past three years, Ukrainian producers have also been supplying products to the US market more consistently.
The main export products include frozen raspberries and wild bilberries. Fresh blueberries are also exported.
Ukrainian berries are purchased, in particular, by EU countries. The main destinations for blueberry sales include the Netherlands and Poland, which also acts as an intermediary for further supplies to other European countries.
At the same time, experts emphasise that to compete in the berry market, producers need to invest in product quality.
