Walnut Prices Double

The price of walnuts in Ukraine has doubled — from UAH 200 to UAH 400/kg. Among the reasons are a smaller harvest last season and losses caused by this year’s frosts.
Petro Skrypchuk, Professor, Doctor of Economics at NUWEE, Head of the regional branch of the Ukrainian Nut Association and a farmer, told AgroPortal.ua about this.
Together with his colleagues, he is developing walnut production in Rivne Region. The producers’ orchards cover a total area of around 18 hectares, and they can harvest up to 4 tonnes of walnuts. Part of the harvest is processed into cold-pressed oil, macerates and other products.
«Due to the weaker harvest last season and losses from frosts this year, the market price of walnuts increased from UAH 200 to UAH 400/kg. But we have managed to keep the price of the oil stable thanks to our own stocks,» he noted.
A 250 ml bottle of cold-pressed walnut oil currently costs around UAH 300 from these producers.

Oil is pressed from them, macerates are produced, while the press cake left after pressing is processed into flour and other food products. Even green walnuts, partitions, shells and leaves can be put to use. Thus, a single harvest can provide a producer with several value-added products at once.
