The rail transit corridor through Moldova is capable of transporting 4.5 million tonnes of grain per year.

This was stated by former head of Moldovan Railways Oleh Tofilat in a comment to Reuters.

According to Ukraine’s estimates, the operation of such a corridor could provide transportation for 10% of grain exports.

Sources in Ukraine and Moldova reported that the parties are currently negotiating a discount on the transportation of agricultural products. Kyiv proposed transporting grain through Moldova to the Romanian port of Constanța at a 50% discount on the standard tariff.

«We are currently collecting information on potential volumes from interested shippers. The information-gathering process has not yet been completed,» a senior Ukrainian industry representative told the agency.

A source at Moldovan Railways said that, in response to Ukraine’s proposal, Moldova is asking for guarantees regarding the volumes of Ukrainian grain that will be transported through the country.

«The parties are currently discussing the timing and volumes of Ukrainian grain transit through Moldova to the (Romanian) port of Constanța,» he said.
