Honey prices in Ukraine remain low: only $3/kg due to poor harvest

The situation on the honey market in Ukraine remains difficult and unstable. The current season was an abnormal one: on the one hand, there was a poor honey harvest, and on the other hand, a significant increase in prices.

This was stated in a comment to AgroPortal.ua by Oleksiy Melnichenko, founder of a family apiary from Kyiv region. For comparison, back in the summer, the price was just over $1/kg.

"Such dynamics indicate the instability of the market, which complicates any forecasting and planning. At the same time, if we do not take into account this abnormal season, in general, honey prices in Ukraine, in my opinion, remain low. This is what often influences the perception of beekeeping as an unprofitable industry," emphasizes Oleksiy Melnichenko.

He names the following key problems:

  • poisoning of bees by plant protection products;
  • insufficient communication between farmers and beekeepers;
  • spread of the varroa mite, which adapts to drugs.

"To solve the communication problem, a joint group was created where farmers and beekeepers can quickly exchange information about field treatment," the beekeeper notes.
