In the 2025/26 marketing year, Ukraine lost its status as the world’s largest exporter of sunflower oil, which it had held since the 2005/06 season. russia ended this 20-year leadership.
This is evidenced by data from the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), UNIAN reports.
Sunflower oil exports from russia in 2025/26 amounted to 4.2 million tonnes, while Ukraine ended the season with 4.036 million tonnes. A year earlier, Ukraine exported 4.744 million tonnes of the product, compared with russia’s 4.2 million tonnes.
Sunflower oil production in russia amounts to 6.897 million tonnes, compared with 4.515 million tonnes in Ukraine.
For the 2026/27 marketing season, USDA forecasts an increase in oil production to 7.806 million tonnes in russia and 5.418 million tonnes in Ukraine. Higher export figures are also expected — 5.1 million tonnes and 5 million tonnes for Ukraine, respectively.

The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) has raised its production forecasts and lowered its estimates for wheat and barley exports from Ukraine in the 2026/27 marketing year.

Due to the suspension of maritime exports, Ukraine is exporting around 300,000 tonnes of vegetable oil per month, which is only half of the previous volumes.
