Ukraine’s Organic Market: 10 Years of Ups and Downs

This is evidenced by the results of a study conducted by the Organic Standard certification body in partnership with Organicinfo.ua, with the support of the Swiss government and scientists.

The total number of organic operators increased by 11% between 2016 and 2025, reaching 473 companies, while the number of agricultural producers grew much more dynamically, by 46% — from 294 to 430 enterprises. The number of organic producers peaked in 2018 at 635 operators, including 501 agricultural producers.

The area of land used for organic production, including land in conversion, expanded by 10% over the reporting period to 418.5 thousand hectares. At the same time, in some years the organic area exceeded the 2025 figure, in particular:

• 2019 — 467.98 thousand hectares;
• 2020 — 462.2 thousand hectares;
• 2021 — 422.3 thousand hectares.

After declining to 263.6 thousand hectares in 2022, the area of organic land reached its highest level of the decade the following year — 471.2 thousand hectares in 2023.

Sales of domestically produced organic products on the Ukrainian market, excluding imports, increased by 30% in physical terms between 2018 and 2026, from 6.7 thousand tonnes to 8.7 thousand tonnes. Revenue rose by 62% to $34 million. A significant decline in sales occurred in 2022, when 6.28 thousand tonnes of organic products worth $17 million were sold on the domestic market. Sales have gradually increased since then.

At the same time, exports of organic products declined by 17% in physical terms over the decade to 202.3 thousand tonnes, but increased 2.3-fold in value to $176 million. The largest export volume during the reporting period was shipped in 2019 — 469 thousand tonnes worth $189 million. The lowest export volume was recorded in 2023 at 198 thousand tonnes, although revenue was only a quarter below the decade’s record level and amounted to $141 million.
