Moldovan farmers are threatening large-scale protests if the authorities do not reconsider the decision to grant Ukraine a discount on rail freight transportation.
The ultimatum was issued by the Moldovan farmers’ association «Farmers’ Force,» RBC-Ukraine reports, citing local media.
The farmers are demanding that the government respond to their demand by August 21.
According to the head of the association, Alexandru Slusari, he has already met with Prime Minister Vasile Tofan. Their discussions focused on farmers’ concerns about preferential rail transit for Ukraine.
Against this backdrop, Slusari recalled the situation in 2022–2023, when poorly organized transit of products from the neighboring country blocked exports of domestic goods.
«Moldovan farmers had to sell their products at prices significantly below production cost. We cannot allow our exports to be jeopardized by logistical or customs barriers,» the head of Farmers’ Force said.
He also explained that farmers are currently seeking to participate in discussions on organizing the transit of Ukrainian cargo.
If the country’s government does not respond in any way, the farmers promise to launch large-scale protests.
