Part of the corn harvest at the Moya Zemlia 2015 farm in Poltava region may be left in the fields until spring due to low grain prices and the crop’s unprofitability.
The farm’s owner, Hryhorii Shamrytskyi, told AgroPortal.ua about this.
According to him, the price of corn has fallen by half. Under current conditions, losses are estimated at approximately $300/ha. Therefore, part of the harvest may be left in the fields until spring.
The farm has never practised this before. Hryhorii Shamrytskyi himself is cautious about this decision, as not all hybrids can withstand the conditions until spring, and corn can crack in freezing temperatures. In addition, spring harvesting would overlap with sowing and soil cultivation.
There is also an agronomic consideration. If corn is planted again after corn, controlling volunteer corn becomes more difficult. Therefore, leaving part of the harvest until spring is a forced measure that the farm is considering due to the economics of corn production this year.
