Dnipropetrovsk Region Apiary Puts Honey on Wheels

The family apiary Medunytsia from Dnipropetrovsk Region has purchased a cargo van that it will use to deliver its products and participate in fairs across different regions of Ukraine.

Iryna Karabut, co-owner of the apiary, told AgroPortal.ua about this.

The producers covered part of the vehicle’s cost — UAH 350 thousand — with grant funding they received for taking first place in the CraftUP Ukraine educational and grant project. They financed the remaining amount themselves.

Because of the war, there are significantly fewer people in Zelenodolsk, and there are no fairs or events where we could meet customers. We opened a small shop at our production site, but realised that if we want to develop further, we have to go to consumers ourselves.

The need for their own transport became particularly apparent during the producers’ trip to the Agricultural Technology Days in Lviv Region. Participation in the event showed that, for mobile sales and product presentations at fairs, the business needs to be able to transport a significantly wider range and larger volume of products.

This year’s honey harvest amounts to around 2 tonnes. Half of it is sunflower honey, around a quarter is acacia honey, while the rest consists of other varieties — wildflower, forest wildflower, coriander and linden honey. The main focus, however, is on acacia honey: it is used for products such as nuts, pastes, dried fruit and berries in honey. Creamed honey is a separate product line, currently available in around 10 flavours.

For reference: CraftUP Ukraine is an educational and grant project for craft food producers organised by the online publication AgroPortal.ua with the support of the Government of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The project involved 40 producers from different regions of Ukraine. Following the business project presentations, the Medunytsia apiary took first place.
