The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine has approved the Biomethane Production Development Program until 2035 and the Action Plan for its implementation.

This was reported by the press service of the Ministry of Energy.

According to First Vice Prime Minister and Minister of Energy Denys Shmyhal, the program unlocks Ukraine’s potential to become a major producer of biogas and an exporter to the European Union, which will help Europe get rid of its dependence on Russian hydrocarbons.

In addition, it will help strengthen Ukraine's energy sustainability and give impetus to the development of renewable energy by attracting investment in this sector.

The program envisages the construction of new biomethane plants, modernization of existing biogas plants, creation of investment incentives for business, and deregulation of the connection of biomethane producers to gas transmission and distribution networks.

«Our ambitious goal is to reach biomethane production volumes of 1 billion cubic meters per year by 2030 and increase them to 2.1 billion cubic meters over the next five years. In particular, at the first stage of the program implementation, it is planned to launch eight biomethane plants and create an institutional framework for the full functioning of the biomethane sector,» — the minister said.

According to him, this year it is planned to gain access to the EU database on renewable fuels, initiate the conclusion of an agreement with the European Union on mutual recognition of guarantees of origin for biomethane, and approve rules for determining the quality of natural gas.
