Ukraine’s bioethanol production should reach 1 million tonnes per year by 2030. At present, the country’s existing production capacity totals only around 400,000 tonnes of bioethanol annually.

This was discussed during a panel discussion held as part of Grain Ukraine 2026.

According to Taras Mykolaienko, Executive Director of the Ukrainian Bioethanol Producers Association (Ukrbioethanol), the war has brought renewed attention to Ukraine’s bioethanol industry. He noted that the country’s existing capabilities could reach production of one million tonnes within one and a half to two years, while emphasizing the need to be prepared for external challenges.

The situation in the Strait of Hormuz triggered an increase in fuel prices, but unexpectedly, bioethanol helped France avoid a crisis. At some filling stations in France, bioethanol costs €0.80 per litre. This fuel consists of 85% ethanol, while conventional fuel costs around €2 per litre, resulting in a sharp increase in bioethanol consumption. I believe we will overcome all the risks as well. Even if Europe does not purchase our bioethanol, we will be able to supply the domestic market.

Taras Mykolaienko added that bioethanol plants built at the beginning of the war paid for themselves in approximately six months. He also noted that new bioethanol plants are expected to remain profitable.
