Ukraine is ready to postpone EU agricultural subsidies to speed up accession

Ukraine is ready to postpone access to some of the EU's benefits, in particular within the Common Agricultural Policy, to speed up the process of joining the bloc.

This was stated by Vice Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration of Ukraine Taras Kachka in an interview with Bloomberg.

According to him, Ukraine could temporarily postpone receiving EU agricultural subsidies for several years to ease concerns about one of the bloc's largest and most politically sensitive programs."

«This approach is possible, but let's discuss how to apply it», — Kachka said.

It is noted that Ukraine has faced tensions with some EU countries due to the liberalization of trade rules for the export of Ukrainian agricultural products.

In case of joining the EU, Ukraine would be entitled to significant agricultural subsidies, which makes this issue one of the most controversial in the budget negotiations of the bloc.

Taras Kachka emphasized that Ukraine's priority is full membership in the EU as soon as possible, even if it means delaying access to certain policies and funding streams that other member states receive. Ukraine is ready to quickly fulfill the EU's requirements and aims to sign the accession agreement as early as next year, depending on progress. According to him, member states will need several more years to ratify Ukraine's membership.
