Food products in Ukraine may become more expensive after EU accession

The removal of trade barriers in the event of Ukraine’s accession to the European Union may affect food prices.

This was stated by Oleksandra Avramenko, Head of the European Integration Committee of the Ukrainian Agribusiness Club, in a comment to UNIAN.

She noted that Ukrainian producers will find it difficult to adapt to the conditions of the common market if integration happens too abruptly, so prices on store shelves may rise.

«Products will not disappear, because we still produce significantly more than we consume. But there will definitely be a decline in production. And this will lead to an increase in product prices,» Avramenko warned.

The possibility of a decrease in agricultural production volumes and an increase in prices in Ukraine will largely depend on the pace of accession to the European Union — and on whether the authorities will push this process forward too quickly.

«Producers need to fully adjust to European standards and avoid additional losses. But if the government decides that production techniques must be changed more quickly, then we will indeed face a decline,» the expert explained.
