Ukrainian agricultural producers have completed the sugar beet sowing campaign.

According to the National Association of Sugar Producers of Ukraine «Ukrtsukor», the planted area totaled 162.1 thousand hectares, which is 18% less than last year and the lowest figure in the history of independent Ukraine.

«The leader in terms of planted area remains Vinnytsia region, where 31.2 thousand hectares have been allocated for sugar beet this year», the association added.

Yana Kavushevska, Head of the Ukrtsukor Association, explained that this year’s sugar beet sowing campaign was one of the most challenging in recent years.

«The weather really made us nervous: frosts, dust storms, and the need to replant about 5% of the area. But despite all these challenges, the sowing campaign has been completed», she wrote on Facebook.

She added that this year’s anti-record in planted area reflects the extremely difficult conditions — both in Ukraine and globally — under which Ukraine’s sugar industry currently has to operate.

«We hope that the weather will be more favorable going forward, and that farmers’ efforts will be duly rewarded with a good harvest and fair product prices»,Kavushevska noted.
