Easter traditions: how to dye eggs in onion skins with a natural pattern

On the eve of Easter, Ukrainians are increasingly returning to traditional ways of dyeing eggs — without dyes and chemicals. One of these methods is dyeing in onion peels using natural plant patterns.

This method is familiar to many since childhood, because this is how our grandmothers often prepared Easter eggs.

First, you need to collect leaves or herbs of various shapes — they will create a unique pattern. Eggs should be taken out of the fridge in advance so that they are at room temperature and washed thoroughly.

Pour water over the onion husks and bring to a boil. Meanwhile, moisten the prepared leaves with water and gently apply them to the shell, forming the desired pattern.

To fix the plants, wrap the egg in a piece of nylon (for example, tights), tighten it tightly and tie it. This procedure is repeated with each egg.

After that, the eggs are sent to boil in a decoction of onion husks. The cooking time depends on preference — usually from 5 to 10 minutes. For a more intense color, they can be left in the broth for some time after cooking.

After cooling, the nylon is removed and a natural contrasting pattern appears on the shell. Each egg is unique, because the pattern forms itself

For extra shine, the finished Easter eggs can be lightly oiled.

This method of coloring does not require any artificial dyes and allows you to create traditional Easter eggs with a natural and recognizable look.
